This year, Trabzon Fish Market is experiencing a significant intensity during the Ramadan month. Unlike previous years, Trabzon residents show a great interest in fish for iftar tables, while the abundance and variety of fish at the stalls are remarkable. Since the beginning of the Ramadan month, although anchovies have been seen in limited quantities at the stalls, other types of fish are adorning the stalls.

Fishmonger Ahmet Çoğalmış, stating that the citizens show great interest in fish due to Ramadan, said that the anchovies, which are scarce in the market today, were sold out early in the morning. Çoğalmış said, “Blessings have come to the stalls during Ramadan. People show great interest in abundant and cheap fish. Our prices are; horse mackerel 125 TL, whiting 125 TL, salmon 250 TL, sea bass and gilt-head bream ranging from 300 to 350 TL. Anchovies are scarce, so they sold out early in the morning,” he said.

Scarcity of Anchovies

Another fisherman, Mustafa Karslı, pointed out that anchovies are scarce these days, saying, “Ramadan has come with all its blessings. Generally, at this time of the year, varieties such as horse mackerel and whiting are abundant at the stalls due to the fishing. People show great interest in fish during Ramadan. Hopefully, it will continue like this. Anchovies have decreased significantly, they are coming in very limited quantities now. We can say it’s a shortage now as anchovies have only come in 1-2 crates in the last week,” he said. – TRABZON
